From Bishop Timon - St. Jude Athletic Director Joe Licata:
Growing up playing football is something I will always cherish. Playing in high school, then at a Division I college, followed by a stint in the National Football League - it is a kid's dream. I have been blessed to have life experiences that I will always remember. However, when I look back at my playing career there is one thing missing that each of you have - I never won a high school championship. Every day I walk into the Mel Palano gym at 601 McKinley Parkway and look up at the banners, revealing what special teams we had donning the green and gold.
The 1953 Timon football team was the first in the history of Timon to go through the season undefeated and untied, surrendering only 14 points the entire season. In 1978, the championship trophy returned home for the first time in 8 years behind a 7-1 record. In 1983, the Tigers won their third straight Monsignor Martin League AA Title with an 8-1 record (don’t forget beating rival St. Joe’s). Then in 1988, Coach Paul Fitzpatrick's Tigers buried Canisius 27-0 to bring Timon its 10th Monsignor Martin League AA Championship in 11 years. 'Special' is the only word that can describe what you were able to accomplish together.
In this, your anniversary season, members of these four teams will be honored during a pregame ceremony at the September 21 (7:00pm) Homecoming football game against Greece Olympia.
