Music is not window dressing

Bringing together an alumni chorus for Timon’s Alumni Memorial Mass

One of the most solemn events on the Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School calendar every year is the Alumni Memorial Mass (Wednesday, November 7, 2018, 7pm, Timon Auditorium).

This year as we gather as a community to remember our brothers who have gone on to their eternal rest, we will be adding another element to our celebration of their lives when we debut our Alumni Chorus.

“Music is not window dressing,” says Fr. Jim Monaco ’76, Timon’s chaplain. “Love needs to be expressed. Basically, when we’re singing, we’re giving expression to the love for God that’s in our hearts. That’s really it.”

Laura Lawless joined Timon’s faculty this year as music teacher and director of the boy’s chorus. Bringing in the voices and experiences of alumni to join the boys on occasions like the Alumni Mass helps both groups ground themselves in a special part of what it means to be a Timon man.

“Being in a choir is a wonderful ministry that helps people find that special voice to share with God,” says Lawless. “Choir members are not soloists, they work together as a choir to draw people in with them.”

Fr. Monaco, who’ll be celebrating the Mass, agrees.

“Hymns are not travelling music for the priest, it’s part of the expression of praise, thanks and love we give at Mass. It’s about can God hear us, and what does God really hear when he hears us,” says Fr. Monaco.

Both Fr. Jim and Mrs. Lawless say that when a community sings in unison, it creates a new oneness in praise.

“It’s the oneness we create,” says Fr. Monaco. “It’s unity. It’s a single voice we create from all different kinds of voices singing together. It’s meant to be a unifying moment of prayer. All those voices become one voice coming together for God.”

Both also stressed that singing in church isn’t just for those who’ve been blessed with great voices.

“The voice that you have is the voice God gave to you,” says Lawless, “so he knows it’s all you have to give back.”
