Timon Recognized as a Western New York STEM School on the Move

Recently, Timon was awarded for being a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school at the "Engaged Level" based on instructional efforts and progress in six key STEM areas; STEM integration, connections to Non-STEM disciplines, project-based learning, connections to STEM careers, application of engineering design process and technology integration.

Cameron Farrugia, a member of Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School's Math Department accepted the WNY STEM award at the annual recognition dinner hosted by Roswell Park held at Daemen College. Siemens sponsored the awards.

Farrugia explained the many facets which involve Timon being a STEM school; "students in our Engineering classes have been working on projects in our Robotics club, Engineering class, Audio Video club and game design club. In the robotics club, our students made prosthetic arms for amputees and learned the difficulties to make such intricate devices. In the Audio Video club, students set up radio broadcasts, conduct interviews and stream live sporting events. Recently in our game design club, students made a 2-d platformer game. The students designed characters and objects as well as game levels. A third group worked on the storyline and the final group were the game coders.

Timon's radio club enables our students to experience multiple simulated and real work experiences.  Simulated experiences include conducting interviews, streaming sporting events and broadcasting live radio shows.  They also experience being part of a news crew interviewing public figures in our area.
Through our healthcare career club, our students have the opportunity to experience careers in the healthcare field. Through internships at Mercy Hospital as well as other organizations in the area, our students are given a wide range of professions in the medical field to pursue and then have the opportunity to explore their interests within these fields.

Roughly 25% of our student body participate in our innovative STEM programs in addition to Timon's offerings in advanced placement and college level courses.  For more information on all that Timon has to offer, please visit www.bishoptimon.com.
